Leonardo "Leo" David Salgado

Leonardo "Leo" David Salgado

Graduate Research Assistant

Cornell University

Biography

Leo graduated as Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Sciences (Ingeniero Agrónomo) from Universidad Nacional de Agricultura (UNAG), Honduras in May 2019.

He subsequently began his master’s degree in Entomology with a minor in Applied Statistics at Louisiana State University (LSU), graduating in August 2021. For his MS thesis, Leo worked in elucidating the mechanisms that confer resistance to sugarcane (Saccharum spp. L.) to the stem borers Diatraea saccharalis (F.) and Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) in a series of field, laboratory, and greenhouse experiments. In addition to his thesis project, he worked on projects related to the timing, volume, and efficacy of insecticide applications in sugarcane and rice (Oryza sativa).

Leo joined the Department of Entomology of Cornell University to start his Ph.D. in Fall 2021, working in applied insect ecology, insecticide resistance management, population structure, and phylogenetic analysis of onion insects pests from different geographic regions under the supervision of Dr. Brian Nault.

Awards

Kirby L. Hays Memorial Award, Southeastern Branch, Entomological Society of America 2022
The Kirby L. Hays Memorial Award is sponsored by ESA-SEB. One award is given each year to an outstanding M.S. student. The recipient is recognized with a $200 cash award and a plaque at the annual Branch meeting.
Cornell University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences Field of Entomology Recruitment Fellowship Fall 2021.
The Field of Entomology is awarded Recruitment Fellowships each year, available to incoming Ph.D. students only. After recruitment weekend, or another format of interview, the Director of Graduate Studies and the Admissions Committee rank all interviewing applicants, and the Fellowships are offered to the top recruits.
L.D. Newsom Graduate Student Award in Entomology
This award is given to outstanding individuals who exhibit excellence in academic achievement and graduate research in the Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University. One award is available for nominees in the M.S. program and one award for a Ph.D. candidate.
Fellowship Award (2 academic years awarded)
The Louisiana Division of the American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists sponsors an endowed graduate student fellowship to provide support to a full-time graduate student at LSU pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. in an area related to sugarcane production or sugar manufacturing. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
David J. Boethel Scholarship Graduate Award 2020
This award is given to a full-time M.S. or Ph.D. student who exhibits excellence in academic achievement and has made satisfactory progress on his/her graduate degree program in the Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University. Preference is given to students with research in the area of integrated pest management.
